Bearded Vulture

Name: Bearded Vulture / Lammergeier

Scientific name: Gypaetus barbatus

Mongolian name: Ооч ёл

Other English names: Bearded Vulture, Lammergeier, Ossifrage

The Bearded Vulture, also called the Lammergeier, is a large bird of prey that lives mainly in high mountain areas, rocky cliffs, and open valleys. It is one of the most distinctive vultures in the world because of its long wings, wedge-shaped tail, pale head, dark eye mask, and black feather-like “beard” under the beak.

The Bearded Vulture is different from many other vultures because its head and neck are covered with feathers. Many vultures have bare heads, but the Bearded Vulture has a feathered head, giving it a very special appearance. Adult birds often have a pale cream or orange-coloured body, dark wings, and a long diamond-shaped tail.

This bird is especially famous for its unusual diet. The Bearded Vulture feeds mainly on bones from dead animals. It can swallow small bones directly. When bones are too large, the bird carries them high into the air and drops them onto rocks to break them into smaller pieces. Then it eats the broken bones and bone marrow.

The Bearded Vulture plays an important role in nature. By eating bones and remains of dead animals, it helps clean the environment and supports the balance of mountain ecosystems. It is part of the natural recycling process in wild landscapes.

In Mongolia, the Bearded Vulture can be found in rocky mountain areas and high cliffs, including mountain and desert-mountain regions. It usually nests on cliff ledges where it is safe from disturbance. It flies over wide areas in search of food and can travel long distances across mountains and open landscapes.

The Bearded Vulture is well adapted to mountain life. Its long wings allow it to glide for long periods with little effort. Its strong beak and digestive system help it eat and digest bones. Its sharp eyesight helps it find food from high in the sky.

Although the Bearded Vulture is powerful and impressive, it faces threats in many parts of its range. Major threats include poisoning, habitat disturbance, collision with power lines, reduction of food sources, and human persecution. Because of these threats, the global population is decreasing.

Protecting the Bearded Vulture is important because it is one of the most unique birds of prey in the world. It represents the wild mountain landscapes of Mongolia and plays an important role in keeping the natural ecosystem clean and balanced.
